Prices of food will continue to tumble - Lai Mohammed

Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the Buhari administration was working hard on the economy

- The minister said Nigerians would soon begin to feel the impact

- He applauded them for their patience

The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed has said that as the economy continues to get better, Nigerians will be begin to feel the improvement in their daily lives.

According to report, the minister said the President Muhammadu Buhari administration continues to make moves to better the lives of Nigerians.

He noted that the country being out of recession was as a result of the work done by the administration and that prices of food will continue to tumble.
He said: "Gentlemen, I am happy to inform you today that we are winning! Our well-thought-out policy, encapsulated in the Administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), launched on April 5th 2017, is working and the results are beginning to show. In September, we exited recession and returned to the path of growth, after five consecutive quarters of contraction. As we said then, taking Nigeria out of recession did not happen by accident. It was the culmination of months of hard work by the administration and fidelity to its well-articulated economic policies.

“To show that taking Nigeria out of recession was not a fluke, less than two months later, precisely 31st Oct. 2017, Nigerians got another good news: The country has moved up 24 places, to 145th, in the World Bank’s ‘Doing Business’ report. Not only that, for the first time the country is recognized as one of the top 10 most improved economies in the world. This is phenomenal. More importantly, it is the direct result of a well articulated policy by this Administration.

“Gentlemen, we can go on and on in reeling out the good news. But the bottom line is that as things continue to improve, Nigerians will begin to feel the impact in their daily lives. With the ongoing massive infrastructural development, especially in roads, railways and power, Nigerians will begin to get a new lease on life. Food prices will tumble. Businesses will thrive. More jobs will be created.

“This Administration will not relent in its determined effort to usher in a new dawn for Nigeria. We are winning the battle to revive the economy. We are fighting corruption like never before. We are tackling insecurity with a renewed vigour. While the naysayers, who are obviously in the minority, persist in their pastime of acting as a distraction, discerning and well-meaning Nigerians will continue to appreciate and encourage the good work of our Administration.”

Mohammed applauded Nigerians for their patience as he promised things will continue to get better in Nigeria.

He said: “ Let me round off this address by once again commending Nigerians for their perseverance. Reviving the economy was never going to be an easy task. It was bound to bring some hardship to our people in the short term. Through it all, the good people of Nigeria have borne the pains with equanimity, based on their unshakable trust in the sincerity, capability and commitment of President Buhari. Now, the soothing balm is here. As the results of the government’s fidelity to its well-articulated economic policies trickle in, one thing is sure: This time around, it will be long-lasting.”

Meanwhile, Mohamed spoke on the chances that the All Progressives Congress has against the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019 general elections.

According to a report, Mohammed who made this known in Lagos state said the APC would retain power because the people were not ready to go back to 'hell'.

He said: “As to whether we are afraid of whether we are afraid of the PDP staging a comeback, I can confidently tell you that we are not even contemplating it.

- The trains were built by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) Nanjing Puzhen Co., Ltd

- They are expected to be the fastest trains running in Africa with a design speed of 160 km/h

Nigeria's railway system is set for a turn around as 10 trains ordered by Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in May this year have reportedly rolled off the production line of China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) Nanjing Puzhen Co., Ltd., on September 12.

The trains are said to have adopted Chinese standards, and will be the fastest trains running in Africa. They are also said to also have a design speed of 160 km/h. Gbenga Ashafa, chairman of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Land Transport, was said to have inspected the trains on Tuesday September 12, in China.

In a report by Pulse, Ashafa who was part of a ministerial delegation from Nigeria to inspect the trains said:
"Allow me to seize this opportunity to tell you that Nigeria is a fertile land that is open to foreign direct investments. With our growing population and skilled manpower, you are not only guaranteed your return on investment, but also local content with which to maximize your investments."

Re: Buhari, Buratai and the python panacea by Idoko Ainoko (Opinion)

Editor's note: Ainoko Idoko, a public affairs commentator from Kaduna in this piece writes on the ongoing Operation Python Dance by the Nigerian military in the south east and the crisis with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He also decried the 'erroneous impression' that the international community would call for an end in the operation and the growing tension in the region.

One Emmanuel Ugwu wrote and published the article: Buhari, Buratai, and the Python Panaceathat has been published on several online platforms.

Ugwu should be commended for this piece not l because it was a work of art or some remarkable masterpiece but because in that single rant he was able to lay bare what ails the southeast of Nigeria.

From this writer it became apparent that the problem of the Igbo nationality is that too many great minds from that ethnic stock have taken the concept of being gentlemen too far to an extent that they have handed their fate and that of the entire geo-political zone over to frothing rabid fellows like the writer and the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

The distortion of facts overseen by such characters take on an hallucinatory quality to an extent that one is constantly having to do double takes to be certain that one has either read or heard aright.

While the lies, propaganda and fake news emanating from zealots like these have no impact on other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria it is alarming how the same hogwash is swallowed un-chewed by poorer strata of the southeast people, who have now been whipped into the kind of frenzy that makes group suiciide not only possible but also easier to attain.

Ugwu apparently has issues with Operation Python Dance II. He did not say if the first version of that military exercise deprived him of revenue as a bandit or kidnapper, since the disruption of these evil enterprises were major achievements of that drill in 2016.

But he vehemently made it known he is not a fan of the ongoing second edition of it. To him the operation is meant to defeat the “Biafra consciousness” even though he could not satisfactorily articulate how a defunct republic is in danger of being defeated.

He also posited that the southeast was a peaceful zone that didn’t require the emptying of the barracks to militarized. Could Ugwu be talking about a southeast that is different from the one where a teenage girl was caught with two human heads, different from one where worshipers where hastened by a hail of bullets to meet their creator during a Sunday church service, different from the one on which a priest was abducted and killed, different from the one where Kanu's IPOB daily threatened to annihilate the rest of us, different from the one where a ragtag band of cutthroats outed themselves as members of the Biafra Secret Services? When a group of apparently mentally challenged people announce the formation of their own armed forces and someone thinks it is unconstitutional to send another army to quell them then it is not those that formed the impostor armed forces that are in need of psychiatric intervention.

It takes a supreme level of mental incapacitation to expect that the police would be sent in to quell an insurrection in which the insurgents have boasted of having nuclear weapons and their leader had vowed a two week timeline for over running the country.

And if anyone is in doubt as to what pushed Kanu to try burning the entire Igboland they need not look further than pseudo intellectuals and half baked analysts like Ugwu, who wallowed in the self deception that the army cannot use operation Python Dance II to get the Igbo heartland over a barrel. It may interest anyone with such shallow mindset that an enlarged support base for Kanu would make an already bad situation into a disaster, rendering the southeast into a wasteland that will not recover in the lifetime of the present generations. Nobody wants that.

The erroneous impression that the western countries would rush to the rescue cannot be more badly conceived. It will take at least six weeks before useful international discussion would take place if the IPOB terrorists were to be dealt with the way they deserve and it took less than three days for Kanu to become a fugitive despite his Shekau-quality rants.

When the western countries do intervene, it would be to send some genetically modified grains and food items with spermicidal quality to guaranty people from that area no longer procreate to breed terrorists. The world is in unison when it comes to the realization that humanity does not need another terror group.

The insults heaped on President Buhari in the piece are consistent with the tempo set by Kanu, so that someone who should know better than the terrorist wrote in such fashion attests to the value they jointly share. It further gives credence to the stereotype held about the ability of a certain people to show respect and courtesy or otherwise. It is therefore pointless to take more out of that. If it was pointless responding to the insults on President Buhari it becomes even less relevant to bother about the invectives poured of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai.

Had he been inefficient then the IPOB terrorists would not have had any reason to be worried. They are bitter only because he maneuvers in a way that perplexed sponsors and IPOB foot soldiers alike.

It seems Ugwu has a morbid aversion for snakes, which is not surprising. Opposites attract while like polarizations repel so the one with the personality of a serpent becomes repulsed by snakes.

Now that the writer has made his aversion known perhaps the operation cab be renamed Operation Lion Roar, Operation Eagle Flight, Operation Buffalo Gallops or Operation Snail Crawls so long as the objective of stopping a terror group in its cradle before it goes berserk is achieved.

The operation would rid the area of terrorists and the likes of Ugwu should rethink alluding to civilian casualty when the IPOB militants that got themselves killed had earlier vowed “Biafra or Death”.

They should rather be asking why Kanu fled and left them behind as human shield or why Ugwu is hiding behind his keyboard and not joining on the battlefield.

At least in this regard the writer was truthful: “Kanu was a source of bombast” so why and how did some people's brain go mushy to the point where they commit suiciide to please him? It therefore fraudulent trying to sustain the lies of a collective hatred of the Igbos by other Nigerians, who had endured over 24 months of being called “animals” living in the “zoo" by Kanu, IPOB and the Ugwus of this country.

The insults might have been tolerated but the nation would not brook the existence of a parallel army. It is called insurrection and countries of the world know how they deal with that.

Kanu and Ugwu, being children of anger, may not understand this just as they are ignorant of where to channel their angst. One of their own, Senator Ike Ekweremadu is effectively the professional chairman of successive constitution review committees in the National Assembly but has never thought it wise to include a clause for referendum in the recommendations to plenary yet he prances around allowing youths from his geopolitical zone to chase shadows.

Kanu and his IPOB terrorists have never taken it upon themselves to ask him why he has not done the needful to set the legislative framework in place for the breakaway of Igboland from Nigeria.

Ekweremadu even attended the meeting that proscribed the terror group and the terrorists saw no sin on his part. The governors in the zone are "sons of the soil" yet they have not done much to improve the life of their people, IPOB has no issues with this.

The leadership of the southeast is the real snake oil and pro- Biafra separatists have nothing against swallowing that bunkum.

The larger population of Igbos, who are great people, should manage the rabble rousers among their people to a point where they will appreciate what the army is doing. Without Operation Python Dance II disparate Igbo groups would have turned on each other by now.

The army is on ground to help and Igbos should support it to help stop the guaranteed self-destruction that separatist terrorists are resolute on inflicting.

CESJET calls for immediate arrest of Nnamdi Kanu

A group has demanded the immediate arrest of Nnamdi Kanu

- The group also support the proscription of IPOB by the south- east governors

- They also praised the Nigerian army for declaring IPOB a terrorist group

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has backed the proscription of the the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its declaration by the Nigerian Army as a terrorist organisation.

In a statement sent to NAIJ.com , the group also demanded an immediate arrest of Nnamdi Kanu. The group, at a conference in Abuja, also lauded the Nigerian Military for taking the bold step and doing the needful by declaring IPOB as a terrorist group.

CESJET also commended the southeast governors for daring to proscribe IPOB even when they are daily blackmailed politically with threats of being labeled as traitors of their ethnicity.

The group executive secretary, Comrade Ikpa Isaac also called on the National Assembly, the Presidency (Executive) and the Judiciary to adopt a common front in dealing with the menace of IPOB as a terror group by taking all the steps expected of them.

The group statement reads: "No room should be left for these terrorists to maneuver or manipulate the system to continue intimidating and threatening citizens. "Since IPOB reportedly enjoyed massive financial, intellectual and political support from highly placed persons from the southeast, we proposed that the federal government delivers an amnesty package for those who funded or supported IPOB up until Friday September 15, 2017 to offer them the chance of distancing themselves from the terror group.

"Anyone subsequently found to be aiding and abetting  the group should be treated in accordance with the Terrorism Prevention (Amended) Act 2013."

The group urged the state governors to act on the proscription of the IPOB by arresting members and supporters.

The statement read: "We implore the governors to back the proscription order up with actions. They must immediately audit their cabinets to identify IPOB supporters and sympathizers in their folds since such people can sabotage them from inside.

"We however note that the governors did not prescribe any punishment for these terrorists for the evil they had brought upon the land in the last few years. There was neither any indication as to what would happen to anyone that continues to carry out activities under the name of IPOB.

"Furthermore, nothing was said of the other franchises that the terrorists use to operate, like the Biafra Zionists Movement. They did not talk about their sponsors and sources of funding.

"There was no mention of justice for the innocent Nigerians killed by these miscreants in the last few days. These are questions still begging for answers."

CESJET called on the southeast governors to be categorical in the terms of reference security agencies will act upon to enforce the proscription of the group.

CESJECT said: "We also observed that there was no call for the immediate arrest of Nnamdi Kanu as the leader of IPOB terrorist group or any other person who goes out in the name of the group or its violent agitation.

All these people, including the lawyer to Kanu, are accomplices that must be treated as such."

The IPOB’s media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, said the speed with which the governors announced the proscription of the group’s activities showed that the governors were disloyal.

MASSOB's leader Uwazurike calls for election to hold in Anambra

-MASSOB leader urges members of his group to go out and vote during the upcoming election in Anambra

- Uwazurike, during the MASSOB's 18th anniversary said that Biafra will be achieved without violence

The leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Ralph Uwazurike, has insisted that the upcoming election in Anambra state will hold. While addressing members of his group during the 18th anniversary of MASSOB, Uwazurike said there is no need for Biafra agitators to boycott the November 18 gubernatorial election in Anambra.

He reassured his followers that Biafra would be achieved without any form of violence whatsoever from MASSOB.

Uwazurike's statement coincide with the army's declaration of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group.

Military has categorized the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group. The Defence Headquarters said following analysis by the military on the various activities of the group, the Armed Forces has profiled the IPOB as a terrorist organization.

Meanwhile, the founder of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and top leaders of his group have allegedly gone into hiding following Friday’s September 15 declaration by the Nigerian Army that IPOB and other Pro-Biafran groups were terrorists organisations.
Investigations by Punch on Saturday September 16 revealed that Kanu and his top lieutenants had ‘disappeared’ from his country home in Afaraukwu near Umuahia and other places he frequently visited.

Ikpeazu appreciates God for averting bloodbath in Abia, says 12 million Igbos living in the north

- Abia state governor has appreciated God for averting bloodbath in the state

- The governor also disclosed that about 12 million Igbos are living in the north

- He said Abia needed peace for business to thrive, especially in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia has expressed gratitude to God for averting bloodbath in the state, following the withdrawal of troops deployed to Abia for a one-month military exercise code-named “Operation Python Dance.”

Ikpeazu made the remark on Sunday, September 17, when he visited the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abia council to commiserate with journalists over last Tuesday’s invasion of the secretariat by soldiers.

The governor noted that the presence of the troops sparked tension across the state.

He said: “We are grateful to God for intervening in stopping what could have been the greatest bloodbath known in the history of mankind.”

He also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for reposing confidence in Southeast Governors’ Forum, “by giving us a second chance to talk to our people on the need for us to live as one united nation.”

He added that the Igbos remained the most widely travelled people in Nigeria, living and conducting businesses in every nook and cranny of the country.

The governor put the estimated population of Igbos in the north at about 12 million, with Borno having the least population of about 50,000 Igbo households. He said Abia needed peace for business to thrive, especially in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state. “I am very happy to say that normalcy has returned to the state,” he said, adding that Muslims worshipped in their Mosque on Friday in Aba. He, therefore, urged residents of the state to go about their lawful businesses, assuring them that government would continue to provide adequate security for lives and property.

The governor described the invasion of the NUJ secretariat as unwarranted, saying that “journalists do not deserve such an attack”.

He said that although journalists faced different hazards in the course of their duty, military attacks only happened under military regime or war situation and not in a democracy.

Ikpeazu, who complained that the activities of his administration were under-reported, urged journalists to help in reporting the state positively to the world. He promised to look into some of the challenges facing the Abia NU, including taking steps to complete the union’s unfinished permanent secretariat.

Earlier, the state chairman of the union, Mr John Emejor, narrated how the secretariat was invaded by no fewer than 20 soldiers without any provocation.

Emejor said that Abia NUJ was the only council in the country that still operated in rented apartment.

He described the relationship between the union and Ikpeazu’s administration as frosty and urged the governor to take steps to reverse the trend.

The Abia correspondent of The Oracle Today newspaper, Bonny Okoro, was manhandled during the attack. His Samsung tablet, as well as a cellphone belonging to the correspondent of Daily Times, Mr Sunny Nwakanma, was also destroyed by the assailants.

Gov. Ikpeazu was accompanied on the visit by his Deputy, Chief Ude Oko-Chukwu, Rep. Sam Onuigbo representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, and the Pillar of Abia NUJ, Dr Anthony Agbazuere.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state had been issued a 24-hour ultimatum to dethrone His Royal Majesty, Israel Okwu Kanu , the paramount ruler of Isiama Afaraukwu in Umuahia, and father of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

The group, Umuahia Youth Movement, said they want the monarch removed because he failed to caution his son, Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB.

The group in a letter to the Abia state governor said failure of the governor to dethrone the monarch will force them to take laws into their own hands and dethrone the monarch.

OAU SUG excos fight over N3.8m, VP beaten up, Social Director stabbed (photos)

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the leaders of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Student Union Government (SUG) broke into a serious fight over disbursement of money .

According to reports, two people landed in a hospital following a fight between members of the SUG in OAU Ile-Ife, Osun state, on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

The students had reportedly been fighting over N3.8m which had been given to them by the school's management, to disburse for useful projects within the institution.

The fight which led to bottles being broken and the SUG vice president, Miss Tosin Jacob allegedly stabbing the social director, Adebayo Emmanuel, in the arm after he reportedly gave her a headbutt, started during a meeting they had called to discuss how the money would be shared.

Confirming the fight between the excos, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the SUG said: “ What happened is not something we can keep elaborating on. The breaking of a bottle occurred in a meeting held inside the president’s office is not an issue for public consumption and it has been resolved. Even at home and at the federal level, we have misunderstanding. So, we had one here and it has been settled. This is a human setting and anybody can pick an offence. ”

Confirming that the money has been disbursed to the SUG leaders, Prof. Isiaka Aransi, OAU's head of student affairs division said: “ The money has been disbursed. It is their money and it was approved for disbursement. "

Reports claim that the SUG had earlier been accused of embezzlement by the students, following claims that they had bought a bus for N900,000 instead of the N2.5m they said they had spent out of the N3m they received.

Photo: Fire destroyed a family's home but this Virgin Mary statue survived

The Rojas family in Robstown, Texas lost their three homes to a fire just as Hurricane Harvey was hitting the area. All three houses were destroyed by fire and as they looked around the remains they found an intact statue of the Virgin Mary in the ashes.

Natali Rojas says, 'some may blame God and some may blame the hurricane but the only thing standing were holy things. As you can see this statue is the only thing that survived. I dug in there for things and all I found is a Virgin Mary'.

The family said the Robstown Fire Department battled the flames even as the hurricane raged. "I wanna thank the Fire Department of Robstown for courage to show up in the storm while the tremendous power, the wind, the rain were going and they were still out here trying their best. It was incredible," said Rojas, Natali's father.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket… put some in the fridge

A personal story about fertility and egg freezing

The first time I mentioned to my mom that I wanted to freeze my eggs, I made her cry. A procedure that looked to me like plain-old-science and an exciting new choice, incited a much different story for her. She was worried for my safety, the unhappiness that comes along with going against societal norms, the wonder of childbirth, and the tyranny of the biological ⏰.

What is 🥚 freezing?

Women are born with a finite number of eggs, and as we age the supply and genetic normalcy of those eggs decline. When you’re 25 your egg count is about 22% and by 35 it is about 5%. As you age the quality of your eggs decline and it becomes harder for those eggs to become fertilized into healthy babies. A uterus, on the other hand, is not as affected by age and can carry a baby even past menopause.
Egg freezing (aka Oocyte Cryopreservation) is a procedure by which hormones are used to bring as many eggs as possible to maturity within a two-week period. The eggs are then retrieved and frozen(vitrification), which has 90–95% success rate of surviving freezing and thawing process.
The end goal is that women can use these ‘younger’ eggs, when they are ready to be pregnant with a higher chance of getting pregnant, due to the higher quality of eggs.

Why? Because choice.

Egg freezing is a choice for family planning, just like birth control is.
As a child I was a tomboy and in college I was a 🤓, and along the way I missed the memo that was supposed to make me want to prioritize marriage and children. Growing up, I idealized my father. Then suddenly had a rude shock when I realized, in fact, I couldn’t be just like him because… I was a woman.
However, none of this should matter. I have my story and each woman out there has her own. Those choices and reasons need no justification. Progress of science and technology means that we can provide these options for women. Market economics means that companies begin to provide these options because employees are asking for them.
Maybe you missed a memo growing up and never planned for marriage or children. Maybe you always wanted a family but haven’t met the right person yet. Maybe you want to focus on your career. Maybe you want to have your second child at 38 and want to make that process easier. Maybe you are not ready.
For various reasons, childbirth is being pushed to later stages of life, and since humans aren’t evolving anymore, science and technology has stepped in to make this possible. However, society appears to create a stigma around fertility, and discussion of it. Talking about this topic, not only with my mom, turned out to be unexpectedly challenging.
Some times people would make sweeping generalizations about egg freezing and lifestyle choices, that made it difficult to discuss at all.
Some suggested that I wasn’t serious about starting a family. Some were surprised that I was so open to talking about it. Some assumed that my boyfriend and I weren’t serious because “otherwise why would you need to do this”. Some assumed I wanted to do it because I want to get ahead in my career. Some people were confused.
Here’s how I see it. The 🌎 can be a horrible place if you are a women. Perhaps this is not the case for you, but overwhelming the media messaging for women is that beauty matters more than brains, and that you’re only worth as much as you’re able to find a husband. And then, of course, have children. And a career. And to top it off we say, and you must achieve all this before the impending biological clock runs out of time. ⏳.

The gory details

Statistically speaking 33 is when your egg count takes a bigger step down, and I prioritized it for myself on my birthday last October. At the time I worked for a small startup, which did not provide the benefit, and I planned to pay for it myself. Based on the initial ultrasound and blood tests, the 👨🏼‍⚕️ advised that I could get between 7 and 14 eggs. I was disappointed. I was paying out of pocket and this meant at least 2 cycles to get the required 20 eggs for a live birth.
After being disappointed for a while, and judging myself for having a low egg count, I made a plan.
I decided to take 3 months to focus on my fertility. Based on the doctor’s advice I temporarily stopped my ketogenic diet and moved to a more balanced diet. I reduced my ☕️ intake down to 1 double-shot espresso a day. I started taking daily supplements of DHEA and COQ10.
But then I decided to visit Cabo over NYE. Cabo has had cases of Zika, and my clinic required me to wait an extra 2 months before I could do the procedure. Meanwhile I went through a job transition, which added another month.
As it turned out Gusto, my new employer, offers the benefit to its employees. I was surprised (and estatic) to learn that they did, because I had not expected the earlier-stage companies I was interviewing with to be so awesome with their benefits. 😍.

Timeline

Zig zag from top-left: Base Ultrasound, Injection Teaching Class, The big 📦 of medications, Waiting for Egg Retrieval
After going to an informational session at UCSF, and consults at Pacific Fertility and Spring Fertility, I eventually chose Spring. Not only was it a world-class facility, but it turned out to be located in the building that I live(!) As it turns out, proximity to the clinic is something to consider because you have to go in for a blood draws and ultrasounds every other day — early morning before work. To start with the nurse put me on an estrogen-based birth control, and created a 📆 for the procedure. I also attended an injection teaching class at the clinic.
Mistakenly, I was under the impression that I needed to remove my IUD for this procedure. My concern was that it would affect egg count/ovulation, and I had also read Christine Moran’s post, which indicated that it was better to do so. If you have an IUD, you know that removal and re-insertion can be quite a headache. However, my doctor assured me that I did not need to do so. Woop. 🙌🏼

Action 🎬

  • Day -8, Friday
The clinic places an order for all medicines directly with the insurance provider. I battle their 📞 tree a few times to confirm that I authorize the medications, and worked with my nurse to ensure they were correct.
  • Day -5, Monday
    I stop taking birth control.
  • Day 1, Friday
A big 📦 of medications arrive at my apartment. It has instructions to refrigerate the Follistim AQ, and leave the remaining medications in the box because they have to be stored in the dark. The boyfriend who receives the box from Fedex, puts Follistim AQ in the fridge and leaves to go camping 🏕. I come home to an intimidating pile of syringes, needles, and medication in the living room.
  • Day 1, Friday 10pm
I have never given myself an 💉, and it a bit of a challenge. There are 2 medications to take: the Follistom AQ - this one is easy because it comes in a pen with a tiny needle attached; the Menopur comes as powder and needs to be mixed in a syringe with saline before you inject yourself using the 27.5 gauge needle. 27.5 gauge is not as big as it sounds. You’re supposed to inject yourself in the stomach area at least 2-finger-widths ✌🏽, from your belly button. I eventually realize that 3 or 4 finger-widths is ideal for minimizing pain.
  • Day 3
The boyfriend emerges from wilderness and takes over nightly administration of injections. Did I mention I’m iffy about needles? 😣
  • Day 5, Monday
I wake up feeling slow and bloated, with bags under my eyes. Exercise is out of the question by now because of the risk of my ovaries twisting. I give up skinny jeans and switch to wearing tights.
  • Day 8, Friday 9am
I start Ganirelix, which prevents me from ovulating. This is packaged together with the needle, so there is no measuring or mixing involved.
  • Day 8, 3pm Friday
I start to feel increasingly out of breath. Even short walks around the office have me huffing and puffing like a 👵🏽. I email my nurse and they have me come in immediately. The doctor says I gave him a heart-attack. He advices that this is a side-affect of the hormones, which is causing my estrogen to sky-rocket. Over the weekend, my body adjusts to the hormones and I feel much better. At it’s highest, I have an estrogen level of >4000, which is 20 times the normal level for a healthly 33 year old. No, the increased estrogen does not make me emotionally volatile, but I’m slow like a 🐌. Just call me Gary.
  • Day 12, Tuesday: Trigger shots!
Minor panic about the Lupron — it was supposed to be refrigrated and was not! A phone call and a couple of frantic emails to the clinic later, I’m told that I have the type of Lupron that doesn’t need to be refridgerated. Phew. I trigger with Lupron and HCG.
  • Day 13, Wednesday 11.45pm
I sneak one last snack. No eating or drinking before the retrieval at 11am the next day.
  • Day 14, Thursday: Before egg retrieval
I can barely stand. The boyfriend walks me sloooowly downstairs to the clinic. The boyfriend attempts to make me feel better with jokes about omelettes and 🍳. The doctor comforts me with “the more eggs you have, the more uncomfortable you feel”. My mom calls, just when the nurse is poking my hand with a big needle for the IV. I get distracted from said big needle. Mom remembered! It makes me laugh. Of course she remembered. 😍. They take me into the OR. The last thing I remember is that the anestheseologist likes my socks, and wants to know how she can up her sock game.
  • Day 14, Thursday: After egg retrieval
The retrieval is short, about 20 minutes — just enough time for The boyfriend to grab me some 🍜. I had heard an unconfirmed rumor that ramen is essential to the recovery process. The doctor says I did really well. They got 30 follicles. I feel happy and a bit high from the anesthetic.
  • Day 14, A few hours later
The nurse calls me to tell me that they successfully froze 19 eggs, with which they can guarantee a live birth.
  • Day 14–17, Thursday-Sunday
I am back at work the next day. By Sunday the bloating is gone and I feel close to normal.
I sat down with Jeni Mayorskaya from Stork Club to discuss my experience. I used the Stork Club app during the process to find answers to questions, such as how to make injections hurt less and how much I could exercise.

Reflections

Between all the information coming at you, all the things you have to do, your body that is slowing down, and the story that you’re telling yourself — you might find yourself in need of a 🤗 or a friend. Call in a favor.
Egg freezing is a great option, and if you’re thinking about it, I would encourage you to do it. Leave alone everyone else’s story and think about your own.
I was keen to share my experience to help alleviate some of the stigma associated with the process. Hopefully women can start to feel that they can be open about the challenges and expectations they face around fertility. Hopefully more and more women will start to see that it’s a great option to consider, especially if you have access to it and especially as technology gets more advanced. It’s not a silver bullet, but an insurance policy. That said, it’s not the science that will stop us, but the story we tell ourselves about it.
Romantic and financial future aside, I want the ability to plan my family. If we can use technology to make women’s lives easier in this way, shouldn’t we do it?
Thanks for reading this far! Feel free to reach out if you have any thoughts. And Good Luck! 💕

Sixteen Years After I Said, “I Do”, Here’s What I’ve Learned.

A Touchpoint True Story About Being Married

On this day sixteen years ago, my wife and I got married. The ceremony was held at Rehoboth Baptist Church in Tucker, Georgia, and roughly 11 billion people attended. The service itself was too long, our limo got stuck in traffic on the way to pick us up, and we were so emotionally drained after everything was over that we spent most of our honeymoon floating in a pool in Mexico.
I didn’t know what I was getting into at the time, and neither did Rachel. That’s the thing about marriage — you really don’t know what you’re doing. You sort of stumble into it with good intentions and big dreams only to discover that it ain’t as easy as it seems.
That’s the first lesson of marriage: there’s a learning curve. There’s the obvious stuff, like learning about their personal habits, their idiosyncrasies and unconfessed secrets. But there’s the stuff that isn’t so obvious, like learning how to love the other person.
Not just be in love with them, not just say you love them, but truly, deeply love them. To help them or counsel them, to give them courage and hope and a shoulder to cry on when they need it. These are big things, and sometimes they come at a price to you. But that’s okay.
Because to love someone unconditionally is to open yourself up to being hurt. I’ve done things that hurt Rachel, and she’s done things that hurt me. Some were heat of the moment things and some we didn’t even realize we did, but after every hurt, we circled back around and talked about it. Sometimes, that led to deeper pain.
But it always resulted in our loving one another more, because out of that hurt came two things: an awareness and a desire to do better.
Unconditional love excises selfishness from your soul. It puts someone else in pride of place, which means you have to learn to sublimate your ego. It can be things as simple as changing your eating habits to include actual vegetables, or as difficult as giving yourself the freedom to laugh at life.
Rachel has taught me to take risks, to bet on myself, to trust God when He calls for a leap of faith. I’ve taught her to like comic book movies and given her permission to hone her sense of humor.
So, yeah. It’s a push.
I’ve learned complacency is the enemy of relationships. We are not the same people we were on June 16, 2001. A lot of things have flowed under and over the bridge, and we’ve done stuff we didn’t want to do, but we’ve also paid attention to the ever-changing tides and made the decision to try and get ahead of life whenever possible.
That often puts us at odds with some of the folks we care about, but we’ve learned to navigate those times. It’s never easy, but we know we have to keep growing, keep stretching, keep reaching for that greater something we know God is drawing us toward.
Another lesson I’ve learned is that you don’t grow without resistance. If nothing is pushing back on you, you don’t develop strength. In 16 years we’ve changed homes, changed jobs, and changed our theology; we’ve birthed and buried a daughter; we’ve birthed and are raising a daughter and a son. I know that’s just the way life goes for all of us, but when you’re also constantly trying to grow and change and mature, it wears on you a bit. You start to wonder if you aren’t better off coasting instead.
You start to wonder if maybe you’re the problem. That’s what the voices in my head keep telling me — that our insistence on growing and changing and living life better is our choice, and we have to answer for the consequences. Meanwhile, our faith tells us that growth is the outflow of faith, and the momentary consequences are nothing compared to the bigger picture.
It makes things tough sometimes. Somedays I wake up tired for no reason whatsoever; it’s only then that I realize the mileage we’re putting on our souls, miles that will make us better, stronger people in the long run.
That’s why laughter is so important to us — we’ve learned to laugh at life’s absurdities. To spend time with us is to spend time unleashing a chuckle or two.
We’ve learned to laugh by watching our children, by listening to their observations, and by getting on the floor and being kids with them for a while. We’ve learned that fart jokes are incessantly funny, that strange voices add light to any situation, and that a well-timed sardonic observation can turn a moment into a memory.
It’s part of who we are, and while we laugh together as much as we can, we’re also learning not to laugh at one another. Giggles should build, not destroy.
My world.
And maybe that’s really the biggest lesson I’ve learned: marriage is about building one another, becoming stronger and wiser together. It took me a long time to realize I had more than a spouse, I had a partner. And a damn fine partner at that.
Sixteen years of marriage, and there’s no other person on the planet that I love more than Rachel. I see her in the faces of our children, I hear her in my head when I’m thinking my way through a situation, and she’s the person I want to spend time with every single day.
We celebrated earlier in the week while our kids were on a trip with my parents, and even after 16 years I still learned new things about her. Sitting across the table from her, I saw her beauty, her strength, her humility and grace, and I thought:
I am a blessed man. For sixteen years, and God-willing, for sixty more.
